Living in Ohio has a few perks. We get to "enjoy" four seasons of weather and, strange as it may seem, our state is tied for the most working drive-in movie theaters in the country. Ohioans enjoy bringing their own snacks and citronella candles to the cinema. The Heathen Family is no exception.
Last night, in the shadow of the runway at Wright-Patterson Air Force base, we saw Toy Story 3. I mention the runway because at one point during the movie a cargo plane took off and I missed a bit of dialogue. No matter. It's all part of the drive-in experience. Also, gale force wind and rain, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
When last we left our intrepid toys, they were choosing to embrace love and life with a child, over a sterile eternity under museum glass. In Toy Story 3, Woody and the gang face the inevitable consequences of their decision. Andy is all grown-up and leaving for college. No more playtime.
I laughed, I cried....I packed up all of my stuff in the middle of the movie because the wind started to blow really hard and the rain threatened to soak us... I would will see it again and again.
Actually, the rain abated and we watched the rest of the movie inside the car. The drops on the windshield made for a less than hi-def experience, but at that point it didn't matter much. Woody was in trouble, serious trouble. All we cared about was making sure he was okay. Violet was vibrating with agitation. She experiences new movies with her whole being.
Do you remember the scene in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves where Robin is trying to rescue the Sherwood Forest gang from a hanging? Maid Marion suddenly lets out with a blood curdling "ROBIN!!!!!" It's the best, most visceral scream I've ever heard in a movie that didn't involve sleep away camp. Anywho, that is what Violet sounded like as she screamed, "WOODY!!!!" during the most terrifying scene in the movie.
Here's the ONLY clip I could find containing said scream from Robin Hood. It happens at the 55 second mark, if you want to fast forward past Kevin Costner looking worried and shooting arrows. I'll totally judge you for skipping the deliciousness that is early 90s cinema, but whatever. Just imagine Violet's rumpled little head in place of Mary Elizabeth Mastran-whatsherface and you'll have a close approximation of last night's wail from the back seat.
So yeah, go see TS3 and then stick your hand in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart and pull out a copy of Robin Hood, because that kind of nostalgia is intoxicating. Don't believe me? Visit this link* and prepare to be transported back to the land of mullets and the first Gulf War.
*This is totally a Bryan Adams video and I would have embedded it, you know for your convenience and all, but some Canadian has let fame go to his head and won't allow me to do that.

Stupid. On A Number of Levels.
Last night we decided that we really, really needed to see Public Enemies. Johnny Depp. Christian Bale. Period costumes.Sign me up.
Clearly, I am not a member of the MPAA, but I did view a trailer for the movie and concluded that it was not appropriate for Violet. The Tale of Desperaux gave her nightmares so I'm guessing machine gun fire and lots of blood would send her to therapy.
Call me a square, but in general I feel that 4 year olds should not be allowed to view R rated movies. I mean, except for Raging Bull. All children should see that before heading off to kindergarten. It's just good sense.
So, anyway... Violet was safely stowed at her Grandmother's and we settled in for our 10 o'clock showing of Public Enemies. 10 minutes before the lights dimmed, a group of comically fashionable young people came into the theater looking for their seats. The girls were all coiffed with teeny barretted pompadours on top of their heads. Big purses, tiny jeans, high heels, etc. It was like an issue of Teen Vogue threw up all over them. I snickered a bit and then I noticed that they were escorting a girl child of about 3. She was tarted up just like the big girls, complete with dozens of necklaces around her neck, skinny jeans and a tunic style tank top. It was hard to say if she was a child or sibling in this group. I would like to think that someone got grounded after it was revealed that she took her baby sister to an R rated movie, but I doubt that's the case.
Thankfully, someone wised up about 20 minutes into the film and removed the child from the theater. She didn't seem to be upset by what she saw, but I'm sure she had some interesting nightmares that night, that is, if anyone bothered to put her to bed at all.
*By the way, we enjoyed the movie, but it was a tad long and not nearly as sexy as I had hoped.

Mary Poppins, sex kitten...
I've now watched Mary Poppins so many times that I find myself imagining a secret, sexy back story involving Mary and Bert the chimney sweep. I mean, who wouldn't want to get into Mary's pantaloons? I think that perhaps Mary shacked up with Bert when she was in between gigs and although he never "pressed his advantage" as Mary sings, he did get a glimpse of her bare ankles once. The conventions of the time prevent Mary and Bert from pursuing their love out in the open, so Bert finds a way to show up in an official capacity whenever possible so as to cover their tracks. That's why he has so many odd jobs! A chimney only needs swept a couple of times a year and Mary has NEEDS! I was sure my dirty mind was running away with me until Aaron turned to me the other day and asked me if I thought Bert and Mary got it on when no one was looking.
I think so, I really do.

Diagnosis: Ick
Do not ask me why, but when the funk sets in I bust out the 19th century epics. First I watch Little Women, so that I can detoxify with a good involuntary cry (it's just like an enema for your heart). Then, I move on to Gone With the Wind, so that I can remind myself that things could be much worse. I could be having my leg amputated by candlelight without the benefit pain killers. This movie really helped put my unwanted c-section into perspective for me. If I make it to Oklahoma without intervention I feel purged of the evil and ready for the next phase of recovery. Baking. The lunch baskets in Oklahoma make a girl want to put something in the oven!
What do you do to make yourself feel better?
