WTF!
So, I mentioned back in January that Violet was acting like she wanted to wean. Well, she did. In fact, it happened so quickly that I never gave a thought to what it might mean for me physically. Violet had spent the previous 6 months cruising on 3 brief sessions a day. Morning in Mommy and Daddy's bed, afternoon before nap and evening before bed. If I got up before her or she didn't nap, those nursings didn't happen. I never experienced any discomfort when she missed her Na. If she was having a busy day and we only nursed at bedtime, I felt no different. I wasn't entirely sure that there was much milk left in the ladies. Boy, was I wrong. About three weeks ago, I bought some new bras. Purposely, I got wire-free bras because I was having some back and neck pain from my "good" underwire bras. Now, you must know that I have extremely dense breasts. The issue of bra shopping is a serious one for me. I do not wish to suffer, but I also refuse to look like one of those old ladies who tuck their boobs into their waistband. I thoroughly evaluated each bra I tried on. I knew I had made the right decision. Several days later, however, I was looking at myself in the mirror and noticed that nipples were in distinctly different places. I adjusted the bra, but to no avail. My husband assured me that my breasts have always been uneven and the new bras were just highlighting it. I let it go, but the problem seemed to get worse. I washed the bras. I readjusted the straps and still lefty was hanging low. On Thursday, we went out with some friends and I began to notice that my left breast was irresistibly itchy. When we got into the car and were out of sight, I tore into my shirt and started scratching. On closer examination, I could see that my left breast was visibly swollen. Friday, I felt like crap and couldn't bear to wear a bra. I spent Saturday scaring myself with internet photos of inflammatory breast cancer. Today, I noticed that my right breast is a little tender as well. It seems that I have developed mastitis. Never, in two and a half years of nursing, did I get an infection. Now, three months post-weaning I've got swollen, inflamed boobs and no way to relieve the pain. Sniff.
*Fear not. I have an appointment with my gyno.

Weaning, maybe...
So, I guess we might be weaning? Violet didn't nurse at all today and although I accidentally/on purpose avoided familiar nursing situations, she never asked. I offered it as an enticement to go get ready for bed and she refused, preferring to have chocolate milk. I'm not sure how to feel about it. Logically, I would say that this is a bad time to give up the na, seeing as we are also potty training (more on that later), but I will go with the flow. I am excited by the idea of once again being the sole proprieter of my breasts, but you know how it is. Potty training and weaning at the same time! I might as well start filling out college applications. I always knew that I wanted to wean as gently as possible, but I didn't really think I would get my way. I will watch and wait and try not to offer.

I Feel Like the Other Woman
Violet has never been bottle fed. In fact, she refused to use a bottle when I briefly returned to work. She wants milk in the original packaging or not at all! Recently we have been trying out sippy cups. She eats solid food now and she likes to drink water. We have always encouraged self-feeding, so a sippy cup was a natural alternative to whole cups of water being dumped on everything. On a recent trip to Target I picked up a few cheap cups. Violet grapped hold of one and made the purchase inevitable by totally destroying the packaging and leaving teeth marks on the spout. She refused to let go of the cup. I walked around the store while she clutched the handle in her tiny fist. It was love at first sight. This struck me as odd because we already had a cup and she wasn't terrible interested in it. So, I bought three cups (.99 each). I quickly discovered that her attraction had nothing to do with water. These cups are physically impossible to drink from with the valve in place. It was like trying to suck liquid out of a rock. Still, her obsession was evident. We took a walk and she held the cup like a treasured lovey. Even asleep in the stroller, her hand never let go of this stupid piece of plastic. Yesterday, we bought a Nuby cup. It doesn't have a valve, but manages to be spill proof with a silicone spout. It sort of works like a beach ball valve. You have to bite it to open the hole. Now, there was a cup and it easily released water. Violet just about lost her mind. Suddenly, my totally breastfed baby was hugging this sippy cup as if it were her milk bottle. It was as if she had always used a bottle! I felt cheated on. It was like she was rejecting my nipple for a newer, more pliable one. It was a nipple she could chew on without anyone complaining! When I realized that Violet would rather sit and caress her new sippy cup than practice standing, I knew it was time to intervene. The sippy cup only makes appearances at mealtimes now. I am not ready to be replaced yet.
