Wardrobe Wednesday

We interrupt this regularly scheduled Wardrobe Wednesday to bring you cake.

I'm no great baker.  Generally, my goods are delicious or pretty and never the twain shall meet.  Today's endeavor is presentable and edible and that's about as much as I could hope for.

Because it is Aaron's birthday, there is absolutely no chocolate in this cake.  My husband refuses to eat fruit in it's healthy, raw state, but he sure does love it all pulverized and sugared in dessert form. So, I made strawberry-lemon layer cake with cream cheese icing.

FYI:  Trying to explain the skull-n-bones joke to a four year old is an exercise in futility.  She only understands sprinkles.

This cake might have been 4 layers had Heathen Family Luck not intervened to destroy one layer as I attempted to remove it from the pan.  In the end I think that was probably for the best.  I'm already petitioning strangers on the street to come take some of this cake away.

Any blog readers in the Southwest Ohio area are welcome to come relieve me of my cakey burden.

*Oh, and lest you find me cruel and insensitive, Aaron will only be "old" for 34 days. On October 20, I will join him at the impossibly ancient age of 33. Seriously, neither of us feel a day over 31.

My Efforts to Stop Time have Failed...Again!

Well, she's gone and turned four on me and I guess I'll stop crying any minute now.  We had a lovely, simple party. It was cool and breezy. No one passed out in the grass and nobody needed the band aids and neosporin I brought along.  The rain held off until the last guest was safely in their vehicle.  It was noted that even the weather seemed to be spoiling Violet.

Oh, and Violet got her first big girl bike.  It was given along with enough safety equipment to protect a linebacker.  I suppose it's a miracle that I survived my childhood without knee and elbow pads.

Then and Now Thursday

I'm not reaching very far into the vault for this one, but my baby will be 4 on Sunday and I'm feeling a bit weepy.

Here is Violet protesting the organic, all natural,  fruit juice sweetened cake that I made for her First Birthday. She was so tiny, but she screamed like a big girl for the entire length of the party.

She's all grown up now and keenly aware that crying at your birthday party makes people NOT want to bring you presents. Although, we are still working on staying awake for the festivities.  Fingers crossed for this year!

*Wanna play along? Secret Mom Thoughts would love to have you join the fun.

I ♥ Faces

This week's theme at I ♥ Faces is "Happy Birthday". Violet will be 4 this July, so I have a few birthdays to select from. Her first birthday was a scream fest, her second birthday was so much fun that I don't have any good pictures and she passed out in the grass at her third birthday. So, I decided to go with the actual day of her birth. Of course, that requires that I break a rule and eliminate myself from winning the contest. Obviously, I didn't take this photograph. A long forgotten nurse took this photo for us, but I did spruce it up in Photoshop. Does that count?

A Few Photos from the Farce

It's All Over Now

This is how Violet spent most of her third birthday. After a week of playground hopping with her Arizona cousins and a trip to King's Island amusement park, she simply hit the wall.  She was gracious in defeat. There was no screaming or tantrums. Violet's eyes got heavier and heavier and then she simply laid down and fell asleep. It's probably my fault. I was so desperate to keep moving and avoid sitting still in a room with my mother, that I forgot to take it easy on the baby. The party went on without the guest of honor. My sister and her kids attempted to defeat my Grandmother in a game of Corn Hole.  *I will reassure those of you not from Ohio or Kentucky, that this is not prison-related. Deb continued to tell anyone who couldn't get away from her all about her back surgery and how many times she has fallen down in the last 2 weeks. My Dad spent some time staring at Deb and trying to figure out how she managed to eat the woman he was married to 30 years ago. My mother and father are so rarely in the same room together that it is hard to imagine them as a couple. In fact, the idea is kind of nauseating. I was never one of those  kids who tried to pull off The Parent Trap. So, despite catastrophic toddler break-down, a good time was had by all. Violet got to enjoy all of her gifts when she woke up (she had no memory of her friend Kyra opening them all for her). Also, there was no left over cake to tempt my soul for weeks to come, because it was so blazing hot that the buttercream turned into a limp puddle. Ah, summer!
