Wardrobe Wednesday

I recently got a scanner. I know. Welcome to the new millennium, Heathen Family! Anyhoo... I've been scanning some old photos to embarrass share with friends and family on facebook.

If you are the schooling type, it's getting to be that time of year again. The aisles at Target are full of new pencils and clean, lined notebooks.  I love the smell of school supplies in the morning! I thought I'd share with you some pictures of me from the first day of first grade. The year was 1983.

Aren't we all so cute?  Sadly, I know that at least one of the people in this photo is dead.  It sucks getting old.

How much do you think that Smurf lunchbox would fetch now?  Sigh.

Thanksgiving Flashback

I'm not really here.

I'm there, eating turkey or drinking coffee. Pie might be involved. What time is it anyway?  Don't worry, the rifle is strictly decorative and... enthusiastically screwed into the brick.

Someone is a mite bigger than she was this time last year, non?  Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday Flashback

My high school classmates on Facebook have been posting these little gems all week. Here I am, circa 1987, enjoying the national mall. I'm sure I was slightly disappointed that the "mall" was not an actual shopping mall. The highlight of this trip was when we 5th graders discovered a Jolt Cola vending machine in the food court. I also remember nodding in and out of consciousness during a visit to the Capitol building. We were in a balcony of some sort over looking either the Senate or Congress and I kept jolting awake with the distinct feeling that I was plunging forward to my death. Our class got to meet our state Representative Jim Traficant (visit the link, his photo is worth it) and he nearly crushed my little friend Cathy to death in an enthusiastic photo op hug.

I spent a lot of time crafting the outfit you see me wearing here. I wanted to be comfortable and fashionable for my whirlwind 36 hour trip to D.C.
(We got on a bus at 2AM. Drove all night, saw the sights and got back on the bus late in the evening to drive home again. I can't understand why my mother didn't want to chaperone. )
Anyway... I built the outfit entirely around my new, red, Chuck Taylor hi-tops. The pants had big silver zippers on the front, for flair. Don't be fooled by those suspenders! They are not on backwards. I was just that cool. I fancied myself an extra on the set of a film like Ferris Buellers's Day Off or Sixteen Candles.

I don't want to talk about the perm.

Friday Flashback

NaBloPoMo has opened up new channels of cheating creativity for me. I need structure to keep my wheels on the road.  In the spirit of fostering a healthy routine for myself, I am declaring today the first of many Flashback Fridays. I apologize if that sounds like a cheesy gimmick for a local radio station, but alliteration will not be denied.  So, please to enjoy...
This photo may represent the last time I had muscle definition in the abdominal region. The little boy sitting beside me is actually my sister Brandy.  These photos are part of a larger series taken by a friend of my step-dad. The friend bought a brand new, fancy 35mm camera and we were the only models available.  The photographer told me and Brandy to pretend to play football. Clearly, he wished he had gotten little boys to take pictures of. I distinctly remember that I had no idea what to do with that Nerf football.  We may be reenacting some pre-school version of the Heismann Trophey pose, who knows.
I can't believe my mother dressed me like that. I was peaking nipples all day.
