My parenting/homeschool philosophy is pretty laid back. If it weren't for the fact that people keep asking where Violet goes to preschool, I wouldn't even bother with labeling myself a homeschooler (yet). I guess I agree with the Scandinavian tradition of delaying formal education until six or seven.
Of course, we do all sorts of preschool-like activities. It's not like I sit around eating bon-bons all day while Violet watches Sponge Bob. I have a
So, when Violet developed an interest in the letters of her name, we showed her how to write it herself. It turns out that my sweet little boo doesn't care for the letter I, but we're working on it. In the meantime, Violet discovered that her pet name "Boo" and what a ghost says are, in fact, the same thing. Violet loves "spooky" stuff. I wrote out BOO for her one day almost a month ago and although she initially refused my request to write it herself, I could tell a spark was lit.
Last night I found these sticky notes in various places around the house. There were also a bunch of rough drafts crumpled on the floor in the craft room.
When a lesson seems to have been learned purely by accident I usually look at Aaron, pretend to shake imaginary dust from my hands and exclaim, "School's done for the day."
I'm going to go eat some bon-bons now.

Way to go Violet!I love that my kids love to practice writing their letters, but the billions of sticky notes I've been finding EVERYWHERE are driving me a little nuts.
ReplyDeleteRock on Violet!
ReplyDeleteKelly, you my friend are (but most especially your daughter) an unschooler. Welcome! I tried fighting it for a while, but it is what it is or we are who we are.
Check out The Unschooling Handbook or anything by John Holt. I haven't read this one yet, but there is a new book called Radical Unschooling: A Revolution Has Begun. Radical Unschooling is different than just unschooling but it may be something you'd like to look into.
What a great start!
ReplyDeleteMy kids love to write too. Mae's class isn't starting a writing unit until next quarter so she likes to get her fill at home. The other day she sounded out the word "questions" and came up with "cweshuns" all on her own. Although the spelling was wrong I love that she made the effort to try. Very exciting when you can witness your child learning, seeing it click!
That is some mighty fine penmanship for a pre-schooler. Go Violet!
ReplyDeleteThat's cute as cute. Boo! All over the place?
ReplyDeleteMy third child refused to even hold a crayon unless it was to stab the plasma TV with. Making marks on paper could not be encouraged, til one day aged 3 and a half the little sod picked up a ball point pen and wrote his name. I can't stand a smart arse.
He's at pre-school now and his writing of his name has gone downhill already. He's conforming to the stereotype of being a boy = messy handwriting.
I have a bruise in the middle of my forehead...
